Good oral health care begins in early childhood. Many parents forget that babies have teeth just below the gums. A parent should begin cleaning a baby's mouth even before the first tooth appears. Once the first tooth appears, parents should begin brushing the baby's teeth with a soft toothbrush. This helps children get use to having a toothbrush in their mouth and it helps remove the sugar and bacteria that can cause cavities. After a baby's teeth begin to appear, it is important for you to schedule their first dental visit. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that all children have a dental visit at age 1.
